Your First Period: What to Have Ready

August 29, 2026 · 5 min read

A first period can arrive at home, at school, during practice, or on an ordinary afternoon. Having a few things ready ahead of time can make the moment feel less surprising and much more manageable.

Start with simple protection

Pads, disposable period underwear, and reusable period underwear are all approachable options because they are worn outside the body. Keep more than one choice available if possible, so there is room to discover what feels most comfortable.

Pack a small period pouch

Include one or two pieces of protection, a spare pair of underwear, a small disposal bag, and individually wrapped unscented wipes. Add a brief note with the name and number of a trusted adult if the pouch will be carried to school or activities.

Choose comfortable clothing

Soft, easy layers and a darker bottom can help someone feel more at ease while learning what their flow is like. A sweatshirt tied around the waist can also be a reassuring backup without drawing attention.

Talk about what to expect

Explain how to use each product before it is needed, where clean supplies are kept, how often to check protection, and who to ask for help. Keep the conversation practical and calm. A period is a normal body change, not an emergency or something to hide.

Refill after every cycle

Check the pouch together and replace anything that was used. Being prepared is not about predicting the exact day. It is about knowing that what is needed will be close by whenever that day comes.
